Seven canines added to ranks, one named after former department member.
Seven European-bred German Shepherds were introduced as the newest members of the Suffolk County Police Department Canine Section during a press conference on June 20th in Yaphank.
Champ, with handler Matthew DeWitt, Chief, with handler Christopher Fezza, Brick, with handler Shawn Petersen, Kaos, with handler Keith Menotti, Wolf with handler Sgt. Kevin Krause, Axel with handler Ryan Neems, and Mylo with handler Ed Gomez, demonstrated training techniques learned during the first several months of training.
The dogs, born in 2015 & 2016, will finish patrol training and then go on the road for some real life experience before receiving training in specialized techniques including sniffing out explosives, drugs and human remains.
Officer Petersen’s dog, Brick, is named after retired Third Precinct Officer Tara Brick who died from breast cancer in June 2013 shortly after she retired.
Officers DeWitt, Fezza, Peterson, and Sgt. Krause are new handlers who transferred to Canine Section at the beginning of the year.
