With the warm weather approaching, it’s important that we do what is necessary to keep our pets happy and healthy. Making sure they’re properly groomed is a very important part of that process. During the warmer months, you should make sure that your dog’s hair doesn’t get too long. A thick coat of fur, on a hot summer day, can be very uncomfortable and your pet can get overheated. Depending on which breed you have, will determine the best cut for them. Pets with long hair can also start to form mats on their body. Mats are like one big painful knot of hair that can be both hurtful and harmful to your dog. To help prevent matting, you should frequently brush their fur and schedule regular appointments with a groomer. Maintaining your pet’s nails is another important part of keeping them healthy. If your pet’s nails get too long, it can make it hard for them to walk or jump. Taking your pet for walks is one natural and fun way to help file down their nails. It also helps to have their nails regularly cut to prevent them from getting too long. During the hot summer months, the pavement can get very hot and possibly burn your pet’s paws. If you think this may be the case, don’t let them walk on it. If it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your pet. As a pet owner, you also want to make sure your pet has good dental hygiene. As your pet gets older, their teeth can start to get dirty and smell. To help keep them clean and healthy, you can buy pet friendly toothpaste and toothbrushes to help keep them clean. As always, I recommend regular checkups with your veterinarian. I love to take my dog, Jasmine, to the Willow Pet Hotel in Deer Park to get groomed. One of the cool services they offer is a pet friendly tattoo, which looks great with the shorter hair. The tattoos come in many colors and designs. In addition to grooming, they also offer boarding, day care and spa services for your pet.
Victoria’s Fun Facts and Tips:
• One way to keep your pets cool in the summer is making sure they have a nice shady spot to lay in.
• Always keep fresh water available for your pets.
• It’s flea and tick season. Be sure that your pets are treated to protect them, and you, from disease.
• You should NEVER leave your dog in the car alone on a hot day. The heat from the car can make it feel like an oven and the heat could kill your dog. Also, it’s against the law.
• The Willow Pet hotel is Long Island’s FIRST pet Hotel and has been around for nearly 50 years.
