I recently had the privilege of interviewing cat behaviorist, Jackson Galaxy. I also had the opportunity to see his show, Total Cat MoJo Live. It was a unique interactive presentation that included some great guitar playing and a Q & A with the audience. He discussed his new book and educated everyone on how to better understand their cat.
Jackson is probably best known for his hit TV show, My Cat from Hell, on Animal Planet. He has written multiple books, including, Cat Daddy, an inspiring story that chronicles his life and his incredible journey from shelter worker to becoming the leading cat behaviorist. His latest book, Total Cat MoJo, is a complete cat care guide. It’s a must have for any cat owner or person thinking of getting a cat.
Jackson describes Cat MoJo as, “The confidence that cats exhibit when they are at ease in their environment and in touch with their natural instincts to – hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, and sleep – in a territory where their ownership is assured”.
As a cat behaviorist, Jackson says he works just as much with the families as he does with the cats. Adding, “the one thing animals have over people, is that they don’t make excuses”.
I asked him what the biggest challenge was when having a cat go from a shelter to a home? He said, “The hardest thing is probably getting people to go to the shelters. Many people have this negative association with shelters. But shelters are helping to save and rescue animals. That’s why it’s so important to encourage people to go to shelters and adopt a pet in need.” He also told me that his hope for the future is that there will be no more shelters and that one day there will be no more animals being killed because they don’t have homes.
I asked Jackson, if there was just one piece of advice he could give an owner having trouble with their cat, what would it be? He said, “Remove yourself from the emotion and approach it like you’re a detective”. He advises people to take a step back and “collect the facts” and from there, you will find the problem.
I wish you and your pets a happy holiday and a very Merry Christmas.
