Huntington, October 8th – With media sources everywhere showing footage of the destruction left behind by Hurricane Florence, Little Shelter staff were busy preparing to launch a relief transport to rescue dogs and cats that needed a safe haven. “We’re heartbroken for the people and animals who have been effected by these storms” says David Ceely Executive Director of Little Shelter. “I feel strongly that if Little Shelter has the ability to help, then we certainly have a responsibility to help” added Ceely.

Aware of the impact the hurricane had on southern shelters and rescues, Little Shelter sprung into action reaching out through email, phone and social media to connect with affected shelters and offer help with animal placement. These groups who were already at over capacity were now desperate for space to accommodate all the pets being found in flooded areas on a daily basis.

Included in Little Shelter’s rescue transports to the Carolinas were multiple dogs that were going to the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter who had once again teamed up with Little Shelter. “When we reached out to our friends at the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter in an effort to maximize our efforts, it was no surprise that they didn’t hesitate to join the rescue mission,” Ceely said. “You just don’t see that type of compassion every day, we’re grateful for Huntington’s partnership,” added Ceely. With the two groups working together, more dogs and cats would be able to be saved at this most crucial time.

While the hurricane has passed, the destruction will take months to clear. In that time Little Shelter is dedicated to assisting shelters down south combat the overwhelming number of animals in need of help. Over the next couple of months, Little Shelter will continue multiple transports to rescue dogs and cats. Little Shelter is currently collecting donations to help cover the continued care of these animals.
